Nepal’s first international Salsa Festival

Salsa dancing first hit the Nepali dance scene roughly a decade ago, but this year offered proof that the dance form is more than just a fad. Salsa is here to stay.
The Salsa Dance Academy, a Kathmandu-based dance studio, celebrated the growth of Latin dance in Nepal by hosting the country’s First International Salsa Festival, held November 19-22.

“Salsa is now popular in Nepal, but it took a long time,” said Binayek Shrestha, founder and CEO of the Salsa Dance Academy.

When the Salsa Dance Academy first opened in Bhatbateni, Kathmandu, in 2004, it comprised a two-person team teaching a handful of students. Shrestha and colleague Katia Verreault hosted salsa parties once every three months at the now-closed Latin Quarter Salsa Bar. Today, the academy employs 10 instructors and hosts a dance party every week at a rotation of Kathmandu-based venues. 

Salsa in Nepal has certainly come a long way.

The First International Salsa Festival featured four days of dance workshops taught by local and foreign dance instructors, including big names in the Latin dance world, such as Susana Montero from Spain. Nightly dance parties followed the first three days of workshops. The fourth day of the festival was held in Pokhara in an effort to expand dance awareness outside of Kathmandu.

Although the festival focused on salsa, the workshops spanned a wide variety of dance forms. Students came to learn hip hop, belly dancing, cha cha, swing, and tango, just to name just few. 

“The fact that it was the first international dance festival attracted me,” said 19-year-old Chhoksum Bista. “And I wanted to get exposed to different cultural styles of dancing.”

But the festival is not just a chance for people to learn new forms of dance, Shrestha said. It’s bigger than that.

Chhath festival starts in Nepal

Arawa-Arwaine is being observed Wednesday in the first day of the Chhath event, a festival of cultural and religious importance in Nepal.

Arwa-Arwaine is also considered the day to take a dip to cleanse the body. Begining with rigorous fasting on Kartik shukla panchami, the devotees go to nearby rivers & ponds & worship the setting sun. Then, they worship the rising sun with special respect and conclude the festival.

The Chhath is celebrated in the ancient Mithila's capital, Janakpurdham with fanfare wishing longevity of the progeny.

It is considered a incredibly challenging festival requiring devotees to be seated for strict fasting during the two days.

Yoga has almost become a lifestyle trend among the urban middle class in this country, courtesy the Indian television channels which telecast holistic health and lifestyle programmes. Yoga CDs, VCDs and Indian health manuals are also easily available and sold at streetside book vends and leading bookstores.

The power of Indian yoga also has government endorsement in the country, which grapples with a high drug addiction rate and work-related stress.

Ratan Kumar Misra, an auditor at a firm in Kathmandu, practises an hour of Indian yoga and pranayam or breathing exercises every morning. Misra is among around 100,000 people in this country who have benefited from yoga and ayurveda as an alternative lifestyle and healing trend.

Yoga Injuries: 5 Tips for Preventing Strain and Sprain

Eager anticipation is what most of us feel on signing up for the next yoga class. Often, though, excitement can lead to impulsiveness, and injury. Staying safe means you can enjoy yoga for many sessions to come.

Some people are typically more injury prone than the rest of the population, and need a little extra instruction. If you've had muscle injury, muscle strain or sprain, you know that sometimes it can take months to heal. The pain and discomfort never mind the debilitation, can last several months, keeping you from frequenting your favorite class.

Here are 5 tips for preventing unnecessary injury in your yoga practice.

 

  1. Listen to your Yoga Instructor's cues Your instructor may give cues such as:- In the equestrian pose (lunge), be sure that the front knee is straight above the ankle. - Lift your knee caps up by contracting the front upper thighs (quadriceps).- Keep the knees directly over the ankles, the hips over the knees, the shoulders over the hips, etc.All cues are given for you to fully experience your body in the pose, to be aware of the normal position of the muscles, and to keep you safe from an injury that could keep you 'out' for months.
  2. Listen to your body: - Be aware of your muscle strength or weakness when you are working at your edge. Some people like to work at the edge, working towards and expanding the body's limits. Expanding your boundaries takes consistent practice and time. Injuries take much more time, and can cause you to lose much of the strength and flexibility, that you've gained over time. You may as well take your time and get continued, measurable results, then to have your dreams, or your classes come to an abrupt halt indefinitely.
  3. Clear away anything you may fall on, or against: How romantic... doing yoga by the fireplace, by candle light, in the dark, balancing on one leg. Yes, I've done it. Maybe it's not the best idea. A little more light, a little less brick, moving to a central location where if you do fall you won't set your hair on fire, or break a limb. Having a look, and clearing out your yoga space prior to practice should avoid any unnecessary injury.
  4. Have NO intoxicants before practicing yoga: Part of the beauty of yoga is being able to feel your body, to notice how it functions, and to experience a true meditation. While performing yoga poses (stretching, strengthening, holding of poses, twisting, balancing and moving in meditation, how easy would it be to lose balance, fall, pull something out of alignment? All of a sudden you are in agony and heading to the hospital emergency ward. Intoxicants are dangerous when performing yoga. Don't do it.
  5. Practice with a sticky yoga mat: During yoga, depending on the type of class, or how much you overheat, there can be sweating and slippage. It is easy to lose your grip, (hands or feet) on a slippery floor surface. A yoga mat has a non slip surface on top and bottom, so it won't slide on the floor either. Before I started my first yoga class, I thought it might be more economical to buy a bathmat with a non-slip underside.Big mistake! Planting one's face into the floor is the result of slipping, or worse. Buy a good quality sticky yoga mat.

 

During your yoga practice, it is important to follow your instructor's guidance, to clear your immediate surroundings of clutter, and to tune in to the body's messages.

Nepal's most celebrated festival Badadashain begins

Nepal's most celebrated festival Badashain began on Friday, which is celebrated by the Hindhu community across the country and is regarded as one of the greatest festival.

The festival is marked for the win over the evil by the supreme power by Goddesses Durga.

The festival that began Friday will last 10 days. It is often called the "Navaratri Parba" or the nine nights festival of Badadashain.

The first day of Badadashain festival is called "Ghatasthapana" that falls on the first day of the bright half of the lunar calendar in the month of October.

On Friday or the day of Ghatasthapana, all Hindu Nepalese worship Diyo (an oil-fed lamp), Kalas (auspicious jar) and lord Ganesh in accordance with Vedic rituals and sow maize and barley seeds in a jar filled with soil and cow dung for germination of the auspicious Jamara (barley shoots).

The Jamara (barley shoots) are later on the 10th day is cut and along with the auspicious are given by parents to their children and by elders to their juniors on the tenth day of the Badadashain festival with blessings for peace, progress and prosperity.

There is also a tradition of sacrificing animals while initiating the germination of the "Jamara".

The world’s shortest person Khagendra Thapa Magar had a heavy burden placed on his tiny shoulders on Friday. Nepal’s tourism board hopes the 22 inch small 17-year-old will help the country attract one million tourists when it celebrates Nepal Tourism Year next year. The ever smiling Little 

Buddha was named brand ambassador for the ambitious task at a function held here. Nepal plans to double its number of foreign tourists from 500,000 to a million in 2011.
As cameras flashed the boy from a remote village in Baglung district, 160 kms west of Kathmandu flexed his muscles to show that he is ready for the task.

“We will be taking him to important destinations across the world with the aim of luring tourists,” said Prachanda Man Shrestha, CEO, Nepal Tourism Board.

As part of its international promotion campaign, Khagendra will fly to Tokyo later this month to urge tourists to visit Nepal in his barely audible voice. He is also expected to visit London, Paris and Singapore.

“Tourists will be told that both the world’s highest mountain—Mount Everest and the world’s shortest person will be ready to welcome them when they visit Nepal,” said Shrestha.

He added that Khagendra’s presence in most of the functions organized as part of the tourism calendar would depend on his physical abilities.

Nepal and Tibet agreement to attract one million visitors

The Nepalese Government and Tibet Autonomous Region of China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aims to attract one million including 100,000 Chinese tourists to the country. This is important to boost tourism ahead of Nepal Tourism Year 2011

The MoU was signed in Tibet's capital Lhasa at the end of a two-day, fourth meeting of Nepal-Tibet (China) Joint Tourism Coordination Committee meeting, according to Nepal Tourism Board.

The MoU provides for the operation of buses between Nepal and Tibet, allowing regular Nepali helicopter and charter services in the sacred Mansarovar area, promoting Nepal Tourism Year 2011 in Tibet through media and hoarding boards at major crossroads, and providing Tibet visa to international tourists from Nepal and operating more Chinese airlines in between Lhasa-Kathmandu, among others. The next round of meeting between the top tourism officials from the two sides would be held in November 2011 in Kathmandu.

The students will also benefit from cultural exchange and different teaching techniques. You will be placed in either a public (government) or private school, depending on the area you wish to work. Your main role will be to teach English, however you may have the opportunity to assist in other school activities such as sports and extra curricular projects.

Generally as a volunteer you will be teaching for 2 to 3 hours per day, 6 days a week, to students aged between 6 and 13 years old. "A LOCAL grandmother is heading to the roof of the world full of hope her adventure will brighten the future of some little lives.

Erica Beesley is setting out to trek from Katmandu to the Everest Base Camp on September 24, and hopes to take the goodwill of the wider Coffs Harbour community with her.

“It is something I’ve always wanted to do and now that my children have grown up and are independent I’ve decided to head off,” Ms Beesley said.

But before she departs the 56-year-old mother of four and grandmother to four is planning to raise money to support an orphanage in Nepal."

Nepal lies on the lap of the Himalayas. It is well-known for its rich and diverse culture, ethnicities and religions and is home to approximately 23.5 million Nepalese people. Nepal, also known as the 'Land of Everest' or the 'Birthplace of the Lord Buddha', has a variety of attractions to keep tourists coming back for more. This country is one of the most exotic destinations of the world for Adventure, Wildlife, Cultural and Pilgrimage Travel.

Nepal spans geographically over an area of 1, 47,181 Sq. Km and Nepal's altitude varies from 90m to 8,848m above sea level, at the summit of Mount Everest. The whole country can be dividable into three distinct belts.

The Northern region consists of the snow-capped Himalayan range which forms the northern border of the country and represents 16% of the total land of Nepal. In this region the altitude ranges between 4877m and 8848m and encompasses eight of the fourteen highest summits in the world, including Mt. Everest, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and others. Up to 4500m, the vegetation is sparse and although rare, the Snow Leopard and Danphe bird (the national bird) are also found here. In this region the inhabitants produce and sell yak cheese besides working as guides and porters.

The middle hilly region has elegant mountains, hills, valleys and lakes and accounts for about 65 percent of the total land of Nepal. It is formed by the Mahabharata range that soars from 500m up to 4877m and the lower Churia range including Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal.

The southern Terai Plain region occupies about 17 percent of the total land area of the country and the average elevation of these flatlands is 65 to 500m above sea level. These lowlands consist of dense sub-tropical forests, marshes, wildlife reserves which include the Royal Bengal Tiger, One Horned Rhinoceros and the Gharial Crocodile, and is highly fertile thus making up most of the cultivated land. 

Nepal is a member of the United Nations and is currently writing a new constitution following the recent political changes. Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal is and it has its only international airport -Tribhuvwan International Airport. Seven UNESCO world heritage sites are located in and around the Kathmandu valley. Major export commodities are pulses, oil cake, catechu, jute sacking, carpets, handicrafts and ginger.

Ancient techniques from Nepal on view at Kennesaw State

Kennesaw State University, which has long had a practice of bringing international art to campus, hits a home run with its current exhibit, “Living Treasures of Nepal: Masters of Ancient Techniques in a Modern World.”

The work in the exhibit, co-curated by Asheville artist Barbara Cook and Kennesaw professor Lin Hightower, takes us armchair travelers to the Katmandu Valley, where artisan families of the Newar people have developed and practiced Buddhist devotional arts over many centuries.

Based on careful study of the Buddhist iconography of their forebears, these artists create representations of the Buddha and his incarnations through what Hightower calls “the five Buddhist revered arts”: lost-wax casting, repousse, stone-carving, wood-carving and painting.

It’s painstaking, labor-intensive work. For example, to produce a Paubha painting, similar to the Tibetan Thangkas often exhibited at Oglethorpe University, many artists make their own paper and grind their own pigments. The paintings are dense with intricate detail, rendered with pinpoint precision.

So are sculptures and carved wood architectural elements. Sculptors enhance supple forms with filigree, gemstones and often painted surfaces. Floral elements and sinuous bodies animate carved downspouts, lintels and the like.

It’s no wonder that visiting artists Rejesh Shakya and Ujay Bajracharya -- whose sculpture and paintings, respectively, are featured in the show -- make only six or seven pieces a year.

The exhibition has an agenda. Cook, who has worked closely with Nepalese artists for 20 years, put the show together not only to expand awareness of these artists and their work but also to advocate for the preservation of these art forms.

Concerned that the tradition is dying out, she founded Traditional Handicraft Center in Katmandu in 2006. She wants to find a broader market for the work as well. (Most pieces here are for sale.) Read full article......

Yoga Mind: 10 Simple Secrets to a Great Meditation

A cool body is the secret to a cool mind.  There are many more such simple secrets to a great meditation practice. Here are 10 secrets, especially designed for those who practice yogic or tantric meditation the way the ancient masters intended it.
1. Cool body, cool mind. Loose clothing, open soul. Before meditation, clean your body, mouth and stomach by taking a bath, gargling, etc.  If you meditate immediately after taking bath, your body and mind will feel fresh and awake.  During the day or evening, you may take a yogic half bath (vyapak shaoca) by cooling arms, face, navel, neck and feet with cool water. Also cleanse the mouth and nose with water.  Heavy eating, or eating the wrong foods, may result in constipation or indigestion, which will make you sleepy. Wear clean, loose clothing. Tight pants will prevent you from sitting longer. A lungi (sarong) is an excellent type of clothing for both men and women during meditation.
2. Sacred space, silent mind. Sit on a meditation blanket or pillow made of wool or any other non-conductive material. Keep one blanket that is only used for your personal  meditation.  Use a wool blanket, because wool is a good insulator from the electrical currents in the earth. Create a sacred “pitha” in your place of spiritual practices by only using it for meditation or study of spiritual scriptures. Do not meditate on your bed, as it will tend to make you sleepy.  Keep one room, or at least part of a room, where there is no activity except meditation.  It need not be a large space—3-4 square feet in a corner is sufficient.  By doing your daily meditation there, you will gradually create a strong, spiritual vibration, so that merely sitting there will elevate your mind.
3. Straight spine, concentrated mind. Although meditation is relaxing, it is not the same as relaxation, so maintain alertness by sitting with a straight spine. When your spine is completely straight, it can easier carry the spiritual energy of the kundalini.  By raising your head high and sitting erect, our mind will be alert and awake. Relaxing your back somewhat, allowing your spine to curve even a little, will likely cause your mind to become drowsy and wander.
4. Slow breath, deep soul. Breathe slowly and deeply.  Yogic and tantric scriptures state that controlling the breath is the key to controlling the prana (vital energy of the body), and controlling the prana is the key to controlling the mind.  Do not hold your breath or strain, but allow your breathing to naturally become slower and deeper.  This will gradually induce a deeper and deeper state of calm, concentration and bliss.
5.  Sacred books, sacred spirit. Maintain spiritual flow by reading spiritual books daily.

"About 40 films will be selected for KIMFF 2010. Filmmakers can choose whether or not to submit their films for competition. Around 15-20 documentaries will be short listed to be viewed by the jury. Accepted films not short listed will be screened and still be eligible for the Audience Award. Nepali filmmakers will have the opportunity to participate in ‘Nepal Panorama’, a separate showcase of Nepali entries. The objective of ‘Nepal Panorama’ is to promote Nepali films in all genres.
KIMFF 2010 coincides with the International Year for Rapprochement of Cultures and this year’s focus will be on films that reflect the parallel challenges of preserving cultural diversity and cultural identities and promoting intercultural dialogue. Simultaneously, it will celebrate the variety of life on earth by screening a section of films on safeguarding biodiversity."

An Authentic Yoga Experience: A return to the Ethics of Yoga in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

In reaction against a yoga trend in the west that popularizes luxury yoga clothing and vacations and “rock star” yoga teachers, a yoga movement is emerging in the East Village with an organization offering donation-based classes and encouraging students to practice without regard to personal style of the teacher.
